I just got a page asking me to turn off the adblocker that I use because they depend on advertising as part of their income. It then went to the article that you referred to

They were well known members of the official MB club. Terrible tragedy. Just shows how careful you should be when messing about with engines running in an enclosed space. I used to do it all the time, but since this incident last year I'm much more careful.

Sad news alright, so many of us have ours cars in the garage too with them running while tuning as well, although this case was slightly different, it's something you just would think about reversing a car into a garage, shed, carcoon and being overcome with fumes.

Funny thing is I always reverse park on my drive but have always driven into my garage. Don't want the fumes going into house (if the interconnecting door is open) and don't want them going onto the racking or the like either, just something I've always done.

Very sad story, but I'd like to think they both went without knowing it

We have a similar set up with a internal connecting door. Last I started up a car I was working on to let a young lad listen to the V8 roar without the exhaust fitted. Garage doors were closed and we ran the car for a good 30 seconds before I realised what I was doing. Opened the garage door quickly, but it was very fumy, plus the smell had tracked into the laundry and kitchen............I entered the kitchen from the back door and said to the Missus.......'You cooking again?' Do you know steel pots hurt!!................

Something we take for granted these days. CO levels in new cars are much lower than they were thanks to 3 way catalytic converters. Unfortunately old cars don't have them and it's very easy to forget the dangers.
