Hi,
I have recently brought a 1995 amg C36 and have just discovered how badly she has been treated by a previous owner.
The car has been lowered by applying heat to the springs to deform them, this has resulted in the car being so badly set up and so low that i cannot get it on a transporter. the driveshaft has now broken because of the strain placed on it by the lowering and the front springs are so bad that my mechanic has refused to touch them as thay are so dangerous and he has no idea how to get them out. he says that they are nearly L shaped and it is not possible to get spring compressors on them.
My only option now is to try to do the job myself with little in the way of tools and equipment. can anyone give me any ideas on how to do this as i refuse to let such a beautiful piece of engineering go to the scrap yard just because some ignorant fool disrespected what he had.
Please help!
thankyou

Have you tried a different mechanic?

Where in the country are you?

Just one point,, the MB springs can only be removed with a special compressor, they cost circa £100. As above worth speaking to an MB indie that knows these things.

One should come on and give you some advice

First of all DO NOT attempt the job of replacing the already dangerous springs on your car if you have no experience with this job. The springs in a normal condition are extremely dangerous to remove without the correct tools.

I agree with malcolm, drop the lower wish bone to remove, I had a broken spring that shifted whilst its was being compressed and it looked like it could let go so I wrapped a lot of bath towels in and around the coil so if it did let go the towels would stop it from moving far or flying out.

Seems the logical way around the problem, great minds and all that..

ONE THING PEOPLE NEVER SEEM TO UNDERSTAND IS THAT COIL SPRINGS, IF THEY RELEASE AND FLY OUT THEY COULD KILL YOU!!!!!!!!!!

Bath towels will not stop springs from doing damage. I have seen them fly and thy will go through them like a hot knife through butter. I do believe there are protective steel meshes that could be used but important to remember the process is extremely dangerous without correct tools as already advised by jibcl500.
