Viano
Good morning,

I am looking for a Viano and have been including the 3.0cdi engines with the assumption that we would achieve around 35mpg. Has anyone got some real world experience on these engines please? It would be a compact or long chassis varient.

we haven’t found anything that meets the requirement with the right level of history just yet, but I want to know if I should be keeping this engine in the search or not.

The car will be used as a daily for the wife, so it needs to achieve over 30mpg, her drive is about 30 miles each way and she plods at around 65mph.
many thanks

You could probably achieve that if the 30 mile commute is all dual carriageway with no stopping/traffic. A 651 engined (2.1) would be easier to achieve that.

2014 639 Viano- 651, 5sp Auto. 2009 S211- 646, 5sp Auto.
2009 X long (V6 om642 CDI). Ran for approx 11k miles 'only' due to engine issues.
I wouldn't think the shorter versions would return better consumption. Personally I wouldn't consider the compact for a second.

Cruising was generally 58mph (GPS) so a tad over 60 on the speedo.
My mpg's are calculated by miles / litres, but if the OBD odometer is out that might screw things some. Different rolling radius of the tyres would do that.

It was possible to see a shade over 32mpg on a good run.
Also possible was low 20's.
When running well and as expected with no engine issues the van averaged 24.8mpg one year, and the next was 26.7 mpg.

I've had 3 other 639's all with the 2.1 engines. The 2 earlier models had the om646 engine. The Viano we have now has the om651 engine. I far prefer the 646 over the other diesel engines.
The 646 can return better then 42mpg. The average over years and many miles is closer to 32mpg. I have done better with the earlier 646 engines than the later 651 engine.
My latest 2014 ex long, with that om651 engine has over 32k miles returned an average of 32.1mpg.

Imo these aren't well made. When you compare their build to other MB's you can see where costs have been cut. But they are versatile in the seat configuration's.

The compact is v unlikely to have been a taxi, with associated corrupted mileage. T'others likely have been in my experience.
