Hi all, my Viano 3.0 V6 has a problem with the electric doors, my local van man has checked all the relevant fuses and can not find the fault and has suggested I take it to an auto electric specialist. I wondered if anyone had any experience of the problem and whether or not there is something I am missing? Thanks in advance.

A common problem, but may not be the same cause as others have experienced.

I'm busy repairing one of mine right now.
There are various components that could be a problem. Some can be worked on, and possibly eliminated, fairly easily. Others are much more involved.

Don't be tempted to clean the contact pads, you are more likely to remove the protective coating they have.

Aside from the canbus side of things there is only 1 fuse to each door. Pulling each will reset the controller when it forgets it's a controller, that's often due to low voltage.

On Star there is also a 'Normalisation' programme. That will reset the system to recognise the open / closed parameters.

So far you haven't described your problem.

Thanks for the information, I will pass it on to my Van Man, I am unable to to work on the van myself (disability issues) and my mechanical knowledge is very limited. Would you happen to know of anyone with Star in the Bridgend area of South Wales? (preferably mobile)

Sorry I couldn't point you in the direction of someone down there.

But if you explain what is / isn't happening it's possible I / we might to be able to suggest some thing to try.

There is just no response to any of the buttons, no sound of motors, just dead. The fuses were tested but I am trying to find out if they were removed or just probed, waiting to hear back from the Van Man. He has suggested an Auto Electrician but he can not fit me in until mid January, I feel it could be something simple (that may be a hope) they open and close manually so not all is lost. I loved my Vito Compact but needed something longer to accommodate my mobility scooter, the xlwb Viano with lowering air suspension and comfort for the rest of the family seemed to be a good fit. Limited budget meant I had to go for a Van with higher mileage than I would normally consider, overall I am pleased but it does need some work to bring it back to life. Thanks for all your help, very much appreciated.

Very likely the controllers need resetting.
Pull fuses 27 & 28 on rail F34, for just a second or two.

If that brings then back to life, it usually does for me, then keep an eye on your battery voltage.
It is 'my' theory that low voltage causes these to drop out, feasibly due to load shed. Electric seat heaters do the same, but they recover automatically.

It turns out that my Van Man checked all fuses (without pulling out) but the door fuses are NOT where they should be, he says they should be 30amp? but in 27 + 28 they are not. looks like I will have to wait until auto electrician man is available (mid Jan). P.S the heated seat are working fine and have been put to good use. Once again thanks for your advice, have a great Christmas.

I have had an inverter fitted straight off the battery and it runs my oxygen machine fine (only when the engine is running) But when they reconnected the battery the electric doors started working! sadly one has now failed again. Any thoughts anyone?

Can anybody recommend a Mercedes garage (Independent) in or around Bridgend, South Wales. I have an oil leak from 2x sumps and a rear mains. My usual Van Man says it is too big a job for him. It's not using much oil but I need to get it fixed for peace of mind. 2011 Viano V6 XLWB.

Sorry ignore the previous post.
I've read the thread again, I'm back to thinking the controller is dropping out, possibly due to low voltage.
The doors working again following the reconnection of the battery possibly confirms that.

1st identify the correct fuses, and see if pulling them restores operation.

In you case an in cab reset might be good.

An oil leak on the 642 might well be the in V oil cooler o rings.
Cheap materials, expensive labour.

Thanks for the prompt reply, my guy has had a good look and if familiar with the model , he assures me it's not from the V, but it is mainly a labour cost. He does not think he can spare his ramp for that long a time.

I wondered if it was a bad earth somewhere.

I don't see where 'they' would share the ground connection.

Thank you very much. Found this post via a googly. And promptly registered just to say thanks. Left sliding door stopped working. Carsoft could not find the module. Pulled the fuse and refitted. All fixed. Caused by battery low voltage as predicted. Thank you.

Thanks for your info, I have been wondering about the battery, It has lost charge a couple of times now and I have to charge it overnight. The strangest thing happens, the door that was NOT working starts working but at the expense of the one that was working before the charge! The battery seems to hold for a few weeks then dies but charges ok. My van man says the battery is not the problem but can not give me a reason as to why the problem persists.
