In advance of my Viano arriving in a few days I've looked around the forum with search and not really found an answer to where is best for information on service data and methods plus repair procedures.

Any pointers appreciated.

The service booklet will detail as needed.
Repair methods are best asked about as the need arises.

You didn't mention history.

As the engine takes 9.5 litres the oil service can be good for 22k miles, depending on usage style. Personally if it calls for an annual service I would ignore that.
Remove the air filter and inspect, a good clean can serve purpose.
Same for the cabin filter.
Fuel filter if original change it, or good for 30k+
The aux belts (2 of 'em on yours) are a bitch to replace, but check for degradation carefully.
Coolant should be ok for a few years yet, unless discoloured.
History of any auto box service would be v useful, the 1st wants to be around 40k miles, many say each 40k but I would happily run it a bit more for following services.

As you remove filters and the like look for the date and that can pretty much confirm service history (approximately).

If it's had a hard life consider replacing diff fluid (v specific fluid), cost perhaps less than £20.

Opie oils is a good source.
Febi Bilstein products are good.

I have a spare air filter / turbo seal for if you prefer to replace that. Bought it for my 2009 but didn't use it. They are known to leak. I ran a bead of silicon around the inner and outer surfaces while still dry as prevention.

There are a few considerations and things to look out for on the 642. You'll soon familiarise yourself.

OK thanks. When it arrives and I've poked about I'll know loads more and I'll ask specifics if I can't find a Youtube how to. With a new to me vehicle I have a generic major service list of about 30 operations I go through regardless of claimed history and as you say pulling the filters checking their date codes tells a story.

Yes Opie are good... I've used them a lot for stuff like some very specific transmission oils for a BMW 5-series I had two cars ago and Febi have been my go-to brand for wife's CLK parts.

The biggy for me is the date on the ATF filter (and manufacturer come to that).
From MOT's if nowt else we get a trend of mileage / time and can then approximation place an ATF service within the history.

What's the spec, leccy side doors, sunroof/s, heated seats?

Spec... ha ha. No idea... bought unvisited to be delivered on a transporter. Not seen sunroofs in pic. Has Command I think because there is an SD slot above the CD slot... so might have the other higher spec items like elec doors. It will all be an interesting surprise.

Don't think me reckless... I'm used to buying/selling higher value items unseen from a distance and with cars just do the most intensive research around HPI/MOT history/Gov available data/seller questioning/images.

It is in for MOT at this very moment which of course I can check online so that will give something of a baseline for condition.

Edit: MOT pass with one advisory re a cloudy tail light... good start.

I'm staying calm on all other "before it arrives purchases" but always change engine oil and filter never mind when it was last done... so I 100% know it has decent fresh oil before I start rushing it about.

Assume this is the correct stuff for a 2012 OM642?

Thanks guys... I double checked with Mercedes and they say 229.51 correct for my car... 229.52 spec upgrade for newer vehicles or if you want to treat an older one.

Blimey those air filters are a bit pricey... might have the vacuum out! Wonder what the interval is on them?

They will prob need replacing. The interval is 4 years, I do mine every 2 as they get so dirty.

There's just one air filter on yours,
same as the 2.1

Wife's CLK due a service soon so I reckon I could get away with buying that and charging it to her with 10+ lit left for my next service.

Yes often if you watch something and don't buy then the offer comes in. I know it from the other side as a seller previously using Ebay for a business. I would get a message asking if I wanted to offer all or any of my watchers a discount and I could choose within a certain discount range.

Yup, if you watch a product on E-Bay sometimes the seller can put an offer on it for anyone watching for a limited time. I payed less than DR :)
