Turned out to be the drive shaft mounting. Fitted complete with bearing included.Mechanic said they had to remove exhaust first to lower shaft.Better now.

Soft brushing rotation noise coming through to the middle cockpit from underneath around the transmission lever console.Audible at 20 mph and lower.
Went back to the shop again, mechanic said the brake cable had dropped on to drive shaft.
Put a tie from the plastic retaining clip around the handbrake cable tight up.
Almost elimnated the problem, slight brushing still audible.
Just wondered if the hand brake cable is now pulled to tight against the underneath?
Showed a photo and the cable seemed to be pulled up tight to the broken retaining clip touching the body underneath.
The question ? Could the cable be transmitting the remainder of the brushing noise some way?

Had it on the lift again with the heat shield off rear axle wheels lifted and rotating, full reinspection by chief mechanic, nothing touching drive shaft. Nothing brushing in any of the four wheels when rotated. now he is intrigued he said.
New middle mounting complete with bearing previously fitted.
At the same time we fitted four in better shape staggered alloys balanced, steering tracking checked.
Brushing sound only after the above.

As I asked before could the handbrake cable be transmitting the soft brushing sound underneath the console area below the ashtray.?
The reason it was secured with a cable tie tight up to the underneath body where the retaining clip was broken?
Replies appreciated.

Dump the cable tie, see if returns have another tie and gradually pull it tight, see if at some pint irritating sound goes.
Is there a uj under the dash that cable. Catches on?

In their wisdom BMW fitted a plastic clip to hold the two handbrake cables situated under the floor pan about centre console which sags and eventually breaks (with continual heat cycles from the exhaust) this allows the handbrake cables to drop onto the driveshaft and give a similar noise to what you are experiencing - the fact that older cars have more play in the prop shaft makes the situation worse - I’d try to totally eliminate any slack in the handbrake cable before throwing money at anything else

I’m currently fitting an aftermarket billet aluminium bracket to cure the problem on my 4 series

Car back again and wow! Smooth again, not a sound.Driveshaft off again and brand new mounting and bearing fitted again. The reason last time the mechanic on the job botched the fitting and damaged the outside of the bearing. The new workshop showed me the damage on the outer ring of the bearing.Full health check along with new coolant completed.I appreciated all your comments.Thank you.
