Vibrating Brake Pedal

Hi Folks
got a small problem and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Car is a 1998 W210 E Class 300TD Avantgarde.
Problem is there is a vibration through the brake pedal when braking. The BAS sign and BAS/ASR have both lit up whilst braking hard while driving but have not relit up again on the next journey although no hard driving or breaking has been done since.

Hello Brian, looks as though you have one of the front disc running out of true or warped, common problem,easy to change and not an MB job.

In the worst case the viabration could put the ESP lamp on, but as you say it has gone away,so no problem there.

If your brake pedel is moving up and down when braking the Malcolm is correct, a bent disc. And Life is TOO short and not To short:rolleyes: Or maybe you have a different meaning sorry:confused:

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
brian, try taking the car to a quiet bit of fast road you know about, and indulging in a few sessions of heavy braking.

I've had similar issues in the past, and scrubbed off the buildup of brake dust on the discs by doing this.

There comes a point however when you just have to bite the bullet and get new discs.

Thanks for the help lads and i will try the heavy braking.
And maybe you are right Eric "Life is too short"

It's surprising how cheap replacement discs can be nowadays.

If you are really skint, you could get them 'cleaned up' on a lathe so that they run true; that is assuming they have sufficient thickness.

Who decides what is sufficient thickness.

Does it vary from one Mot garage to another.

Disc thickness is not measured in the MOT

Discs are cheap enough from the dealer - just put a new set on and see what happens. Might as well do the pads at the same time as the old pads will be worn to the shape of the old discs

I think the disc is more or less u/s once it has around 1-2mm scraped off each side; meaning it will not have the strength to brake hard without shearing after the thickness has reduced from around 10mm to 6mm. :shock:

The thickness of a brake disc is decided purley by the manufacturer. We work to their guidlines and all MB Dealers and Inies, for that matter, comply with the manufacturers sizes. This varies from model to model and is guaged on many factors, ie cars with SBC, ABS, etc. They could cheat you and say the discs are on the safety limit, but I doubt it. Brakes are a serious issue.;)
