Vibration

Hi All , have 2002 220 CDI auto 85k miles ,on idle I have a low frequency vibration and it goes again as you increase RPM .Have it when in gear and out of gear !

Also have a fluctuation in idle RPM ,especially in cold weather .It has a very low squeeling noise as rpm reduces sounding like a belt slipping.

Any ideas ?????????

I would check the front poly belt and the idler pulleys, these are relatively cheap and easy to replace

if its a belt look for a worn belt which has signs of cracking or harding which can look shiny its cheap to change

also the belt tensioner may need to be adjusted it may have sliped

some times if you spray the belt with WD40 AND THE NOISE GOES AWAY THEN IT TELLS YOU THE BELT NEEDS CHANGING

if changing belts clean pullys and the belt will last longer

i hope this helps

If the engine mounts fail the engine will move around a fair bit (its heavy), if it isn't sat correctly the entire drivetrain (propshaft, rear diff) will be misaligned.

dont know how heavy it is what you are feeling but lift bonnet while running and see how much belt slap your getting, only change adjuster a week or two ago for same fault, spring goes weak and the belt jumps about all over the place, and sorry to correct the above post but you can not adjused the tensioner, it is spring loaded!

It's difficult to say, but not unknown. MB engine mounts are fluid filled and can leak.

As engine mounts become more complex they have a tendency to fail more often.

had a close look at smaller idling pulley on the right and it moves in and out about 2mm ,it moves laterally the same as the vibe. This may be the problem.

Could this be the alternator pulley free wheel clutch? A well known problem.

Can one of the experts advise?

Went to MB today and they run an injector test.Seems NO 1 was out of limits.
Replaced injector [ouch on the pocket] and everything A1 again.
Thanks again

Look at the belt with it running, if the spring loaded tensioner is jumping about the damper on it is shot, if this is the case check the tensioners bearing they get very tatty and can be sticky due to the spot wear inside the ball race (in the centre of the arm).
If its not that its engine mounts for me too.

Try removing the belt and running the engine for a few seconds, this will isolate the engine from its auxilary parts and if it is the belt or any part it drives you will get that golden silence. Don't run the engine for long, the water pump is not working without the belt and localised overheating & damage will occur if the thing is run for an extended period.

My car was rough as you describe untill I fitted new front engine mounts.

Only use the WD40 if you want to have an early belt failiure.

oops !!!! pleased to hear that its fixed Ive just posted the above before I read page 2

drivetrain vibration

I also have an intermittent vibration problem. Its like driving over rumble strips when it occurs.I believe there is a problem with cooling water getting into the transmission fluid and thereafter damaging the torque convertor.Does anyone have experience of this?

Santa put it in a new thread, otherwise some folks might not see your problem but it may be the prop shaft couplings.
