I'm about to trade my E350d for a E400d absolutely love everything about the new car other than the panoramic roof and rear window having a metal panel unlike my current car with a glass panel. This looks a bit odd to me on the white car as the panel sort of jumps out at you, a bit checkerboard style. My current car is also white but the roof being glass isn't an issue. Obviously not a deal breaker and I could live with it but the dealer suggested having the panel wrapped black to blend in more with the roof and rear window.

Is this a good idea and are there any downsides?

I saw one last week and thought the same thing, an all black roof would look much better and it is easily reversible

Agreed, all Black, would look good, and as Jon, said easily put back, and would have thought wouldn't cost that much, so yes it's a good idea, and can't see any downsides. :)

Thanks for the comments guys. Dealer has quoted £90 is that reasonable? How easy is it to remove at a later date?

Any other views?

Yes it would look better. A word of advice though, be careful when picking a wrapping company. You don’t want to end up with peeling wrap or scratches on the paintwork.

Now I see what you mean. That white metal sheet just doesnt suit the curvature of that car, which is really surprising for a merc to do poor body-styling. Its due to the panoramic roof obviously.
It looks like a zebra crossing.
Provided the wrap matches the shininess of the windows it could look good. Otherwise it could just stick out again. Tough call

Does not seem an unreasonable cost, and I agree wrapping white panel would look far better and is reversible if necessary. I believe it is unlikely MB will wrap it themselves and are likely to subcontract work out. I would want to know who is doing work and see if any detestimonials on their web-site. Seems a relatively straight forward panel to wrap, but I have seen several cars that looked like they have been wrapped by 5 yr olds. Not generally a fan of wrapping, but it does look significantly better in later photo posted by https://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/index.php?members/slartibardfast1.111708/

That's the look I want so much better, similar to how my 350d looks, I take it that's not wrapped though
No, mines not wrapped but if yours gets a quality wrap, the effect should be similar

Thanks for all the comments. I spoke to a couple of places and the wrap seems like the way to go, I did wonder about a really dense tint (to avoid a high gloss black look) but apparently that's only possible on glass. Guess my worry is with it being high gloss back that its going to still look like a patchwork quilt or do I just live with it, after all I'll be in the car not looking at it....decisions, decisions

Wonder why Mercedes decided to replace the glass panel with metal, doesn't seem to make sense

All about who does it, if you had seen my christmas presents you would see where I am coming from.

There is I think an AMG coupe thing near me in gunmetal that was wrapped in the dark on a foggy night by a kindergarten class and its awful without stopping.

Keith, what about Satin Black, it's not Gloss and not Matt, it's inbetween,
could be just right. :)

I asked about other colours with the 2 companies I called but both told me only gloss black was available
