My van has a heater booster button.( right hand dial. the van's a basic spec so the dial is only a button).
2 part question: What does it do to make faster warm up?
Is it a gimmick cos i get a faster warm up if i turn the blower to cold for five minutes!?
If any one knows how to improve it (if its not just a red light, that is) can u let us know.
Cheers.

On the sprinters its a diesesl fed and electrically operated heater fitted to the coolant system, with a small exhaust pipe underneath. At low temperatures you switch it on and it fires up, heating the coolant thus assisting the engine to reach normal temp faster. They are prone to not working cos they don't get used most of the year.

With van cold (and temp below 5 degrees i think) start van and have someone press the button while you listen/look under the bonnet. If you don't hear/see it fire up it doesn't work. If its working it apparently makes quite a difference to warm up times.

Not sure if the Vito is the same but I'd assume so.

The easiest way to tell if its running is to start the engine up and let it idle. press the button so the light comes on. leave it a minute or so and then turn off the engine. You should hear it still running for a few seconds and eventually winding down. If its the same place as the sprinter its behind the passenger side headlamp. the noise is rather unique,, a little like a small jet engine in some respects. Well, mine sounded lik that, but it's broken now, so maybe it shouldn't have sounded like that.

You should be able to hear the difference when it is switched on. You will need to give it a few minutes to kick in and fire up and it should shound like a boost noise similar to a jet plane. Try standing a few yards away from the vehicle and you will hear it easier. (no you can't race chav's with it switched on)

On Sprinters it lives behind the passenger headlight. Its a black box with 2 coolant hoses, a small diesel tube and the electrical connections going to it. Theres also a fragile exhaust outlet at the bottom, try not to damage it.

gonna bump this up, mines stopped working too, on pressing the button to start the booster heater, it used to start with a slow tick tick tick, gradually building up speed until it fired, last year it ticked ok, but most of the time it wouldn't fire up, and started the ticking sequence again, sometimes it'd fire, sometimes it wouldn't, this year, it doesn't even tick any more. with this cold spell, i could really do with it now,

any ideas as to what i need to check to get it back working? i've never really had a good look at it, i know where it is on the Vito, but not any of the workings of it.
