when should you think about changing the chain? i've never touched it before, mines done 251,000 miles so far, i give the van an oil and filter change every 10,000 miles, using Castrol GTD Magnatec, even though Mercs say the engine's good for a 13,500 mile service interval.
There's no rattles or strange noises with the engine/chain, am i pushing my luck?

Any thoughts?

One day take of the rocker cover and set it up on the timing marks on the damper and see how far out the cams are, 3 mm is about the max.

Also if the teeth on the cams are sharp, then there is the danger of the chain riding a tooth.

A new chain can be fed in and the cam wheels replaced quite easily

is it an easy job, or one best left to a specialist?

Thats a hard question, if you are not confident then let an indie do it, it is fairly easy with the instructions

My chains are changed at 200k on average ,but do check the sprocket teeth for wear as Malcom says as you could get an overide of the chain even if it's a new chain then it's goodbye engine .
