Hi,

I'm looking at a Vito van today thats done 166000 miles and I was wondering what to look for and if it's worth buying??

I have driven Merc 814's for years with many more miles that still drive like new and was wondering whether the great workmanship of the lorries and cars extended to the vans aswell.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

Also are servicing and parts cost likely to be ridiculously expensive??

Open the drivers door and rock the vehicle from side to side, any knocking noises, it reqs anti roll bar bushes. Common fault and causes some weird noises on the road, also if it's derv, check for injectors chuffing, if it's been like that a while, you wont get them out with out a lot of work. Also check for sloppy gear change on manuals. Listen for noises from the front of the engine, same as the cars and other vans, belts, alty clutches, pulleys etc, just a bit more of a job to do on these.

Most of them have been driven hard with no care or proper servicing. Be careful.

Have you considered the low roof short wheel base sprinter? I was looking for a Vito but they all seemed fairly worn and quite flimsy by comparison with the sprinters I have driven.

They fit under most car park barriers and are much heavier built than the vito, but are still quite compact. Driving position is also higher if you like that sort of thing.

The other good thing about them is that as most people want the longer wheelbase they are quite a bit cheaper and when I was looking they worked out around a third less to buy than an equivalent Vito.

Just a thought based on my own experience.
