Hi All
I have a 2009 Vito 111 LWB , has an issue whereby the cabin fills up with fumes as soon as van started . Runs well enough , has a slight ticking although still goes well for a 111 . On inspection it appears that on removing the plastic cover that goes over the injectors it has/had black death issue on no 4 injector , can't see any fumes coming from injectors , although it appears to be looking diesel from no 4 injector area . Any thoughts would be appreciated . Thanks
PS when warm it can often take longer to start as though air in system

The fumes will be coming from the leaking injector. I would get the leak fixed by a decent indi before doing anything else. Plenty of good how to’s on here if you do fancy a challenge.

poor starting will most likely be air getting into the system, again plenty of good reading on here. The seals go brittle and leak, a pretty cheap fix.

If it were me, I'd be getting all x4 injector seals replaced and the injectors cleaned/tested while they are out too.

If you just fix the faulty one, special magic will happen and in April, another seal will fail... another in May....

Stands to reason as the one that is playing up is the least accessible one , have done job on a C220 although access was never an issue on that !

Just an update on this , on stripping down found to have the dreaded black death on number 4 injector . Other 3 seemed fine , although I have removed and fit new copper washers as a matter of course . Number 4 was an absolute pig to get out , did eventually come out after several hours of persuasion . Only issue I am having now is cleaning up the bolt hole as due to the amount of the tar build up quite a bit went down the bolt hole and is proving a nightmare to clean out . The original bolt will go in so far but will lock up with about 5mm to go . Any advice would be appreciated .

Good job. I presume No 4 was at the back of the engine, closest to the cabin?

Have you tried running a tap with a taper (so not a blind tap) or sharpen the end of a bolt and run it up & down the hole gently to see if the tip of it will pierce and break up the tar at the bottom? Only other ideas I have is to pour an alkali chemical in there like oven cleaning gel and wait for it to work...

Hi I have tried running one of the old bolts down with a slot cut in it , not sure about a tap as such a long bolt . I sprayed some carb cleaner into the hole last night so hopefully might have some effect .
