Hello,

I am currently looking at options for buying a campervan-type vehicle. The obvious option seems the VW, but I like the spec of the Vito conversion but know nothing about Mercs. Are they reliable/expensive to run/insure? How good are the Vito campers?

Any advice would be welcome!

Thanks.

Ridley.

Hey Ridley,

I just bought a 1978 Type 2 VW Camper imported from california.

I don't think anything comes close in terms of character and style.

Can't tell you how good or bad the vito's are but don't dimiss the VW without having a good look around.

They're class

The general opinion is that the Vito and Sprinter are too 'van-like', when compared with VW Transporter and Fiat/Peugeot/Citroen equivalents respectively.

Are you looking at new or secondhand? Of course, VW have moved onto the T5 now, but the T4 (1990-2004) was a very good camper base. T3 (wedge, 1979-1990) wasn't as durable as the T2s (bay window, 1967-1979) or T1s (split screen, 1950?-1967), but then they'll have age on their side.
