Vito 110CDI, yr 2000, problem started about 2 years ago, upon starting up, the glow plug light went out then after about 10 seconds, came on again, and stayed on, was told my a MB dealer that the glow pugs needed changing, i had all the glow plugs changed back then, one broke in the head as is their wont, eventially it was sorted out, and all was fine for a few days, then the light came back on, the garage (Non MB) who did the glow plugs didn't know why the light came back on, and couldn't find out, it's been like it since, the van starts and runs fine, just wondering why the light still stays on, and if there's a fix for it.

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
Dunno about yours, but on mine theres a little relay/circuit box on the passen ger side of the engine bay that controls the operation of the glow plugs. Might be worth opening it up, on mine several of the fused link wires had melted, meaning that those plugs weren't working.

Thanks for that PoD, will have a look in there and report any findings, as i said, there's no detrimental effect on the running side of things, even when the temp had dropped right down, starting is still fine, it's just a nuisance having the light on all the time, maybe a bit of black electrical tape over the light is the answer lol

Hi coulsdon eagle,

Did you find out the reason for the light staying on? My ML270 had all 5 glow plugs changed by a dealer because two had sheared in the head. Since returning, the light comes on permanently when cold, but after a warm start, it goes out!

never found any reason for it to stay on, maybe a trip into an MB dealers and get it put on a computer, i'm guessing it's a faulty wire somewhere, still had no problems from it apart from the light being on all the time, but i can live with that

The glow plugs dont really go on a mercedes, I found out the hard way all 4 sheard off £1400 later with new NGK glowplugs it turned out to be the relay. If your glow light comes on 9 out of 10 times its something electrical.

Have a look at the solid red single thick) wire on the bottom of the relay behind the passenger side headlight that is attached with a 10mm nut. It's usually very rusty give it a good clean. u be surprized about the result.
