2008 vito 109
Hello people looking for some help !

I have a 2008 vito cab carrier (engine -2148cc)

Recently called a gear box specialist to see if I was able to change my transmission as I drive on motorways a lot.

Being a cab carrier even tho it’s a 6speed gear box doesn’t sit well at 70mph on motorways and is very frustrating with fuel consumption and high revs

I was then told it would be a case of a change of differential as it’s rear wheel drive.

I’m unsure if anyone has done this before and if there is another model like this vito with the needed diff ?

I’m pritty clueless any help / info is very much appreciated

Only the Vito left! W639/1 OM646
Several Vito owners have changed the diff on the 639. It's usually done if it's been remapped and changed to a diff from a more powerful Vito.
(all components are the same across all versions, 109, 111, 115 of the Vito except the rear diffs which are matched to the horsepower)

My 109 (95hp) has been remapped to 145hp and I haven't got round to changing the diff, yet.

Not an expert in this field but you might get away just changing the rear diff, to drop the engine revs.
Just need to be sure first gear is still low enough to pull off up hill with a load.

2014 639 Viano- 651, 5sp Auto. 2009 S211- 646, 5sp Auto.
I haven't considered going from a manual diff to auto diff as I've only had auto's. But you have 6 gears, rather than 5, so I would have thought your range is greater.
What's your revs at 60mph? Mine with the same diff as the 115 are about 2,100.
I would consider going for the V6 diff, but would remap first so it didn't labour too much while pulling away.

If you go for a lower rev diff you will need to tell the ECU, or it will believe there is lost traction and apply brakes / remove power. So that would need a re programme on Xsentry. While I don't know how (but would be interested) I don't think it's difficult.

These figures are all relative to the 115 diff.

V6 CDI * 38:13 *- 2.923 * -10.7% (revs)
2.1L * 35:11 * 3.182 * -2.8%
2.1L * 115 model * 3.273 * 100%
2.1L * 111 model * 3.455 * +5.55%
2.1L * 109 model * 3.737 * +13.85%
2.1L * manual * 4.091 * +25%
I don't have info on petrol models.
