My van (vito 108 cdi)failed it's mot as the load sensor has jammed. The tester said it might be possible to free it rather than replacing it. What would I need to do in order to try freeing it?

Cheers

If it's the same as a Sprinter...

There will be a spring and a metal wire type arrangement connecting the valve to the rear of the van. Figure out which way the valve is pulled when the van is loaded and try to get the valve to move freely in that direction using wd40 or similar. Keep working it until it moves freely in both directions. From memory it's easier if you remove the spring first - it's held by a small nut which will break off if it's seriously rusty tho so beware.

I have to free mine off annually for the MOT - it doesn't take long.

Out of interst, what does this sensor do? I assume it tells you if you're carrying too much weight?

When the van's empty it hardly needs any rear brakes, but when loaded it needs more. The load compensating valve (also commonly known as the load sensor) - compensates for the load and adjusts the amount of rear brakeness (< technical jargon).

"adjust the amount of rear breakness"
Perfectly explained. Thanks for that.

I can see why that would be an MOT failure then.
