Hello to all I'm new here and will post an intro shortly

I have a Vito 113 2012, bought it November last year it's an ex police van and covered 185k miles, I would think it will have been well maintained but probably worked hard day and night!

Anyway it has a rattle on start up and was very apparent after I changed the oil and filter this week! I'm thinking I will need to get this done! questions are

1 what kit to buy I see loads on Ebay some with a link in the chain so it can be split!

2 what can and can't be done on the vito with engine in situ?

3 What's the likely cost best or worst case scenario?

All other advice would be appreciated

Thanks Ronnie

think that during oil/filter change oil drained out of tensioner and filter back to sump worse than "normal" rattle was tensioner waiting to get oil pressure it should have settled to what was "normal" for yr eng prior to oil/filter change, maybe slightly better due to fresh oil ?. tho i am led to understand chains and possibly sprockets can get in bad shape on this engine like you i am curious to know whats involved in changing them, in my case i am hoping that oil/filter changes carried out more often than recommended will stave this issue off for as long as possible,or long enough for me to save up for all the kit required to deal with the matter. and find out what "new" bit of kit benz have reinvented to carry out the change !!!!

2014 639 Viano- 651, 5sp Auto. 2009 S211- 646, 5sp Auto.
My research on the 651 suggested that replacing the tensioner is a reasonable 1st step.
But I would have thought that inspection of the timing gears would be good for peace of mind, or not.

Cheers guys, yes the rattle concerns me and now my attention has been drawn to the rattle it will haunt me! To be fair just after the oil change and the engine had been ran it sat for an hour and the rattle was still evident on restarting, My worry is failure and resulting engine damage!

Thanks Ronnie

I have same engine I replaced my tensioner an sorted it done about 35k since.

The problem is if you need a chain and sprockets done its an engine out job.

as for Cost I got 2 quotes £1900 at MB main dealer and between £900-1000 at Indy.

About £200 if its just tensioner. I think driving round with a failed tensioner and slack chain leads to chain and sprockets wearing out. if it's just tensioner caught early might be ok

around 80k when I had the tensioner done now on 105k.

Since I plan on keeping mine for the foreseeable I'll probably get the chain replaced in another 5k just for peace of mind.

Its reassuring that yours has 180k I think the 651 is a decent engine just a shame about the chain.

Yes the engine is still sweet and pulls very well even after all those miles. I think due to the miles I will need to get the sprockets etc checked. For all I know it might have had a new chain in the past.

Cheers Ronnie

Mines done 123k and doesn't seem to rattle. But if noticed lately that theres a strange sound on start up and seems to get better when set off or warmed up. Wonder if this is sprocket?

What does your noise sound like? The chain noise is a fast clicking rattle like this video

Mine occasionally make a noise on start-up not the all time and not always cold start either but it sounds nothing like the video.

The plastic engine cover can rattle too so check the clips in it. Also check the back box and exhaust. My back box can move a little in its mounting

No mine doesn't sound like that its doesn't have the initial rattle at the start. It's more of a wining noise at start. I'll try post a vid.

No that sounds more like a pulley or waterpump.

I had the water pump replaced around 5 months ago. What type of pulley do you think. I'll get the garage to have a look once I get back after my jollys

Most likely one of the idlers. Easy to identify with the belt off.

On most vitos etc, it needs to dropped a foot and attacked from the back. Depends on what cars its in.
Great stuff. Are they a big and costly job to sort?
Not too bad at all. Normally no more than an hour +parts

I had the tensioner changed at 185k miles and the rattle in the morning stopped. I've done 10k miles after that and no rattle at all, engine works very smooth.
I would change this first as it's a simple job.
