Voltage drop

My car is a merc 190 2.3 16v cosworth the problem i have is the voltage battery gauge is reading 10-11 volts all the time , what i want to know is is this normal for this type of car or do i have to get over 12v ,because i have a audi coupe and it allways reads 13-15volts, also sumtimes my car tends to idle up and down.

Can only speak for what is "usual", not specific for your car, but usually when the alternator is running the voltage should exceed 12V up to about 13-14 volts. Do you have the readouts from an ordinary voltage meter or is it a voltmeter installed in the car? If it´s not rising during revving the engine, something is wrong.

Voltage should be reading 13.2 volts. Suggest a cell may be down in your battery

With the car at idle speed, your voltage should be at least 14.4volts.


And at least 13V with engine switched off.
