try near or behind the battery
that's where it is on my 88 300 te. Tallish, silver relay with a transarent cap and a fuse or fuses in there. May also be covered by a black plastic sleeve or shroud.

Same place on my 89 250D, behind a plastics cover sheet to the rear of the battery cliped to a rail in front of the ABS control unit. The black plastic shroud/cover is awkward to remove and there is a clip which holds the relay onto the body which is also awkward.
