Hi,

I've just bought a 1987 300 SL for some summer fun. The car has covered 113K miles and has a full MB history up to 105K. The car has just had a service and has been filled with 15W/40 oil. However starting from cold I now get a knocking from the head for a few seconds. The car never did this before I bought it, or before I started using Super unleded (98 RON) instead of the regular grade.
Could anyone kindly advise what grade of oil/ petrol they use in their cars?

Thanks,

Kernow

Hi Kernow
I have the same problem with my 560 SEC but I had used fully Synthetic(not recommended apparently), just changed the oil for 15/40 but I still have the noise which is a worn hydaulic tappet. I wouldn't expect the fuel to have any effect on the tappets, valve stems/guides perhaps.
I assume you mean a tappety sound rather than a knocking sound. No way near as serious as for instance a worn conrod small end.
Regards
Mike

Mike,

Thanks for your thoughts. I think you could be right on the tappet noice. I guess I'll just put it to the back of my mind for the moment and enjoy the car for the summer.
Thanks again.

Kernow.
