Hello All,

I have bought a 230te which is in really good condition, one owner etc, the problem i have is that the cetral locking does not work as the previous owner had problems with it so he had it disconnected by a local (not m.b) garage.
I have had a look under the bonnet and cannot see where it has been disconnected, are there any electrical components to this system? p.s the vacum operated headlights still work....
many thanks in advance.....chris

If its like the 190E, the system is powered by an electric vacuum pump (under the back seat on the 190). That would probably have been the handiest way to disconnect it, unless its on its own circuit and he could have just taken a fuse out...

I thought W123 made use of engine vacuum?

I have just mended mine (as Andy hinted, it was a door slave - the rubber seal on the "output" piston had split). I had listened for hisses for weeks and was getting frustrated. Then I had my son BLOW into the control lines in the driver's door. These are key: by sucking green (unlock) or red, you can start to isolate the leak - your mouth can easily tell. "My" seal is on the unlock side, since the seal is on top of the unit. But the blowing was a lot noisier than the vacuum leaking and that's how I found it. Plus you can mess around with bubbles etc that way.

Good luck: I'll bet you a pint it's that seal.

Sorry: that last was for the other thread. For this, there is a vacuum line from the manifold that splits near the steering column. There should 2 non-return valves white nylon about 1cm diam by 1 cm deep with yellow lines going through the blkhead/firewall. That is the start of the vacuum system

LEAK

Hi, Really depends on whether it is also electrically controlled. Is there a unit under the seat? Mine is a 1980, and its not electric. It has taken me around five yrs of messing around on free sundays to get it sorted!

If its the old type, youll find a tank (looks like a load of tenniss balls stuck together) on top of the petrol tank in the boot. Can leak from there. I replaced the rubber seal where the vac pipe enters.
Then check the controller on the boot lock and the petrol flap lock, the rubber on these have often perished leading to leaks.
then check the valves under the bonnet where the whole vaccuum process starts from the manifold (two little yellow units). there is another white one of these under the steering column inside the car.
then check the doors. The driver door has that thing that someone mentioned above. Its a small barrell that controls the opening/closing of all locks in the car. This is supposed to hiss on opening (i think, could be when it locks), it releases some pressure. Whatever it is, ive found its usually something u can pick up for very cheap, even from the dealer. if not for any parts i reccomend dronsfields.co.uk.

As you can prob tell, the vaccuum system on my car is now finally perfect, and central locking is even controlled by an alarm (something i am v proud of!!!).

Hope this helps

Cheers Jay
