1985 W123 230E. I have a leaking front brake wheel slave cylinder. My wksp manual (Technibooks) only shows replacement of pads, rotors etc.

Is dismantling the caliper to replace slave cylinder seals etc fairly intuitive? Any traps? Any hair-tearing obstacles? Or is it a garage job needing special tools and many $$$$$$ ??

(Generally mechanically competent - have replaced many slave & master cylinder repair kits on lesser vehicles such as Ford, Holden, Morris etc, but not the gracious old lady MB.)

Thanks
Paddy

Sorry Paddy,i do not think that kits exist now for doing this (safety issue) any motor factor can offer you a re con calliper.

Thanks Malcolm. (That was quick!)

I'll try my favourite MB wrecker/spare parts bloke.

The repair kits for the calipers are available from Mercedes.

You need to take your VIN with you

and you need to know in advance if the caliper is Teves or Bendix fitted to your car.

Price of kit is about £22 + Vat. Ask for some discount and you will probably get it.

Thank you for that info, In the MB info I have,it does not cover the 123 at all. I must make a point of looking for the newer cars.

Thank you kth. Malcolm

Repair kits are available, and directly from Mercedes, though some dealers are a bit reticent to point this out as they can sell you a complete replacement...I've just had two sets of these delivered by my friendly local Mercedes dealer.

Having shelled out a small fortune for replacement callipers, front and rear, I found the existing callipers were in good condition, so decided not to return these for refund. Mine is a w124, 1986 300 TE. This model has at least two types of calliper so you need to give Mercedes your vin number. Also, there are two repair kits. Make sure you get the one that contains the seals. Part numbers and prices:

Large front calliper repair kit (seal ring set) 3242-3513-0 on pack, invoiced as ma000 420 02 44 at 17.94 per pair.
Rear calliper a001 5867343 on box ma0015867323 stock code at 15.09 per set.

It is no more difficult than changing brake pads, and needless to say you need to take care. A considerable saving, and with the advantage that you stay with genuine MB parts. Have not checked out master cylinder yet. If anyone knows the code for this set, please post.

As a matter of interest, I was driven back to doing my own repair having paid out over 1,500 last year for a couple of pipe replacements (hydraulic suspension flow and return), and correction of a brake problem that has since recurred. On inspection I found one seized brake, one pad down to the metal, and a hydraulic pipe refitted and left hanging on the rear torsion bar as it clearly had been cut too short. Also I noticed copper rather than copper nickel pipe had been used - so back to DIY - at least then you know the quality of the repair.

a mercedes benz brake caliper that's leaking brake fluid, is damaged, has a frozen piston, or is causing uneven pad wear obviously needs to be rebuilt or replaced.
