W123 diesel

My 81' 230 CE has had a Mercedes diesel transplant. All I know is that it is
5 cylinder. How do I tell exactly which engine it is?

If you find that a bicycle beats you at the lights then you have the 123 250 diesel engine. I think they had a grey rocker cover...

However i know of a lot of people who have put later 124 engines in, dont know without seeing it!...

Not altogether familiar with the diesels but I thout that the 5 cylinder was the 300. Mercedes usually cast into the surface of the head the size of engine. This can be under the rocker cover. The first 3 digits of the engine number found on the block are the engine series.

Hi

The engine would be a 3ltr version. Engine number I think stamped on the face of the block at the side of the inlet manifold where the cylinder head meets the block. Should start with 617.
