The heater control (the turny I, II, III position thing) has begun to act strangely. It is very stiff to use and only goes from off to I and II, with III being impossible to reach. Has anyone come across such a thing and if so is it a complete heater replacement job?

If you follow the cable through it goes to the duo valve, and it will be the duo valve that has gone stiff, the duo valve maybe in the bulk head, but I have a feeling that is on the heater on this car.

If you're on about the blower control then that is simply an electrical switch and easy to clean or replace.

If it's the temp control knob then these are connected by cable to the duo valve which is in the engine bay, just before the bulkhead. Easy to get to.

Hi the controls are on cables (w123) remove the trim under the dash n/s and move the controls whilst looking towards the center. You will see/feel the cable controls where they fix to the controls on the heater unit. I found that if you assist the flap whilst turning the knob it will go to position 3. use a little light oil and you should be sorted.
