I have a 1992 230CE which is fitted with 16" wheels and 205 x 55 tyres. I reckon the suspension has also been lowered as there is almost no clearance berween the top of the front tyres & the wheel arch - though the tyres do not, in fact, rub on the bodywork. :D
I find the ride rather harsh & I would like to restore things to something like the original, without changing the wheels & tyres.
However, I don't know what the ride height should be; on my car the bottom lip of the front wheel arch is 62cm above ground level in line with the hub and the rears are 63cm.
Could somebody please advise what the original height would have been - and how the lowering is likely to have been achieved? Just changing the rubber spring mounts, or using shorter springs maybe?
How would I identify changed parts?

Thanks in advance.......

I suspect the springs have been changed. The MB ones are normally black and lowered types are normall painted in another colour (except eibach).

Give your chassis number to a dealer and they can source you EXACTLY the correct springs and cups for your car. They are fairly good value too.

Thanks.....after reading a couple of other threads I did have a peer at mine; they appear to be well rusted as if they are original (but may not be) and one of the spring cups has just 2 pips on it. Can't see any on the other one.
I'l do as you suggest & contact my MB dealer.....

The response I got from my dealer was that the car originally had standard rate springs fitted. They can only tell me what size shims were fitted if I can tell them whether the springs are red or blue.
This seems odd to me; why is that not on record, I wonder?
As I have said, my springs are well rusted, but I understand the colour & etched number is on the top coil of the spring. It would mean dismantling to get to that - but by peering up through the coils I can see what appears to be a red disc inside the upper spring mounting. Would this be the spring colour - or just the paint finish in the mounting?
I've looked at the Russian site - which is now working well! - and tried to make sense of the allocation list for the shims - but it beats me!
My shims have 2 burls, which I gather indicates 13mm.
Also, it seems that the car did have an undertray which has been removed.
Any advice would be much appreciated......
