I have a W124, i have a mint W124, with 125,000Miles on the clock. . I have owned it for 4 years now but to the tank it only gives me 240ish miles out of a full tank. I am not sure whether this is the average miles it should give or not?

Another question is in the morning when the first gear changes i think from 2nd to 3rd it gives out a jerk, once it warms up it is smoother but not perfect. Sometimes you cant even feel it changing gears but at other times it is perfect. One other thing i noticed is that with the car at full load you cannot feel the gear change. I am confused. Can any1 help or advise?

Read the thread. Jerky gear change W124 coupe on this page and you will see that your gearbox is normal. Fuel consumption sounds normal.

You have the 70 litre tank I think? 240 miles doesn't seem very good to me.
Some say your 2.3 is as economical as my 111 2 litre 16V but it's maybe not a very good comparison - for what it's worth I am never under 350 miles on a tankful, and often return 400-odd. I'm an 'old man' driver now, always using a light foot and hazard perception and don't (very often) exceed speed limits.

unless its a special order, the tank holds 60 litres like other 124s

My book also says 72 litres but I either have a dodgy fuel gauge or the tank is smaller. I reckon 60 litre is right.
My gearchange is the same as others report on a cold start - jerky as hell. Soon settles down to something a lot smoother.
As for consumption, I average around the 25-26 mpg mark, cannot for the life of me get more than 320 miles out of the tank. First half of the tank gets me to 180 or 200 miles, second half PLUMMETS at a shocking rate!! It's another one of the those little quirks that makes my car mine and I love it. Have given up any hope of better MPG - I knew what I was getting into when I bought it!

I have a 60litre tank, as i have to fill up every 2 weeks and it cuts out around when it reaches 60Ltrs. I barely get 250miles. I recently tested it by filling up the tank and then going constantly around 50ish mph on a long drive, thats when it gives me 300 miles. Dont understand what can be the problem. One garage suggested my CAT but i dont think it is the CAT. How can i know for sure.

My tank is 70ish litres as I have put in 65 when very dry. Petrol light really is very accurate. It comes on with 9 litres to go on the dot.
Gearbox is a little jerky when cold. Change oil and filter and go easy for first 10-12 changes.
I get 22mpg in town and 29 on a run in winter in an auto. Summer adds about +2 mpg.

If you only ever used the first half of your tank and then fill up again you could get 600 miles to the tank!!!! only joking:rolleyes:

?

How much petrol do you put in for your 'tankful'. I would expect consumption in the mid to upper 20's/gal for town driving and low 30's/gal for general.

MMmmm....
I usually fill up my E220 Coupe at about half. (about 200 miles).
Using ordinary unleaded I get about 10p -12p per mile. I havn't done the sums but this is in the upper 30's. I get nice smooth gear changes and it has done 67K miles. I tend to cruise it with the needle at the figure at the top of the dial. The kickdown usually comes in when I overtake on normal roads.

Using a similar driving style with my 3.6 man XJS reports about high 20s on the Mway and 17 ish on backroads using Super.

interesting I see you have an XJS 3.6 did some wiring on one just before Xmas I always loved the shape and intended to get one one day. I have done loads of work on XJ engines and even devised a way to change the pistons with the engine in the car, I still have the camshaft locks somewhere.

I bought it in 1990. great fun. The Jaguar Enthusiasts' Club has lots of support. Many listed for sale, (range from superb to absolute dogs.)
