I have just purchased a lwb (8 seater limo) W124, with the 250 diesel engine in it. I have found in the boot, there is a second battery and and a closed module with the lettering "PSW" on it, and a large red cable from the battery to the module. There are other wires too, which go under the carpet to the rear area. Does anyone know what this module does??? And why are there 2 batteries on this model?

Nope, its UK registered, but LHD. I took a quick look through the paperwork and its original owner was "the Gouvernement du Grand Duché de Luxembourg". Very impressive huh!

so it is a bomb in it then,,it is probably a twin charging unit to charge both batterys, the limo would use a lot of power in the back of car when engine is not running, hence the two batterys...

Could be this..

Also could be to support power needed for ...

Fridge / Air-con or external heater, just like sleeper cab trucks, motorhomes or caravans have had for the last 10 years or so.

Additional battery would be switchable - somewhere? to prevent main engine battery from being drained simultaneously.

Next time you see a trucker with a fridge unit on box trailer behind, ask if its powered by additional battery etc.

Hope it helps,
Keith.

FWIW I often fit secondary batteries into my vehicles. I run a video production company and the cars in question are used as mobile production units. Secondary battery is wired to a split charge unit (as you would find in a caravan or motorhome) and used to power things like cameras VTRs lighting and monitors.

As previous posters have indicated a limo will have a demand for things like fridges and other 'stuff' running with the engine off. Often an uprated alternator might be fitted or even TWO alternators (done this to several Range Rovers) Quirky car; ~Quirky sytems!

Sound fun though!

Even my 'standard' car has a split charge system with a little (17AH) SLA battery in the boot; This will power a broadcast camera and ancillary kit for a good few hours; Or keep one of those little 'fridge' boxes full of cans of 'pop' going for most of the day on a trip to the seaside..... Many people carriers are now fitted with 12V outlets in the boot; I can see auxilluary batteries becoming fairly standard in the future what with the demands of tellies, playstations and little fridges many of us with kids practically HAVE to haul around these days :)
