Hi there...

I'm not currently on the Mercedes scene, but have recently been offered a very straight W124 260E for £200. The car is on an F-plate, in sky blue, and is really straight... except for one thing.

The power steering doesn't work. Now, setting aside the best-case scenario that the previous owner happens to have let the system run out of fluid, how much would I be looking at for a new PAS system?

Thanks in advance. :D

1. Is it OK to asume the steering is all connected ie turn the steering wheel and both front
wheels also turn.

2. there are two major components to the system.

A. The steering gear itself under the engine compartment to one side

and

B. the pump at top of engine compartment and driven by the poly belt.

You need to establish which part is faulty and a good start would be to ensure the pump and combined reservoir is full up to the mark.

Start engine and see if it leaks.

Turn steering wheel and let us know the results of your tests. We need to know which part is faulty.

If the system was empty, a good idea would be to fill it up, start the engine and move the steering from lock to lock a few times.

If it is refilled put the top back on the reservoir before you bleed it (by turning it from lock to lock several times), if you dont the escaping air will splatter fluid everywhere.

Most certainly :) car was in daily use until about 3 months ago, still pumping strong. It'll be a project car over summer.

I'll have a looksie when I go to look over the car. Does anyone know of a very good classic car insurer who'll be OK with a pair of 18 year olds as named & main drivers..?
