Can anyone please advise on this issue?

1993 W124 saloon 280E auto with cruise control, series 104 engine number, hitherto running very smoothly for 1000 miles plus after recent change in voltage regulator relay to cure intermittent cutting out.

Last week I used the autobox kickdown facility by depessing the throttle to change down a gear to overtake a slower vehicle.

After passing the vehicle and easing back to steady cruise circa 55-60 mph, I realised my car now wanted to surge forward at much higher speed, ie I was having to forcibly restrain it.

On pulling over and selecting neutral, the car tried to idle at over 4500 rpm. Worse, if the engine is stopped, on restarting it, or on starting from cold, it immediately tries to run at 4500 pm plus - very scary, and this has made it undriveable as I have to struggle to hold it on the brakes.

My small local independent has checked throttle linkage in case anything was stuck open or had lost return spring or suchlike, but believes throttle mechanism is OK. They are now at the limit of their experience and expertise. Can anyone else please help? I can also be reached direct via email on address as follows :-

Many thanks

Possibly a stuck butterfly valve in the throttle body due to carbon build-up. Try giving it the proverbial 'dunt' with something solid. If this returns it to normal tickover, then of course it will require to be thoroughly cleaned.

Have you or the garage checked that the switch under the throttle pedal isn't stuck ????

Push the accelerator pedal down by hand and listen for the clicking of the switch underneath going on and off (or press the switch by hand)

If OK, have the codes been read from the diagnostic plug ??

Was it a Merc specialist you went to ??

Does your car have the ASR (electronic anti skid facility on hard acceleration) ??

Where are you located in UK ??

Regards
