Hi all,
I've done a search on this but can only find conflicting info. Sorry if this has been asked/answered before.
Is it safe to remove the timing chain tensioner and refit it? Do I have to do anything to it before refitting?
I'm planning to replace my tappets as one or two of them are a little bit noisy/lazy. Is it possible to dismantle and clean the tappets or is it best to replace them either individually or as a set?
I'm guessing that as the tensioner holds oil pressure when the engine is switched off, it should be able to hold it while I've got it removed?
Should I replace the tensioner at the same time or will the old one be OK to refit? There's no noise from the chain.

There is no problem in using the old tensioner and no benefit in replacing it. just re set it and insert..
I will leave the valve question to someone else

Thanks for the quick reply Malcolm, is there a procedure to reset the tensioner?
I've got a German equivalent to the Haynes manual and it only mentions filling a new one with oil before fitting. It doesn't say what, if anything, has to be done to reuse an existing one.
I'd have thought that as I'm removing it 'servicable' it would be filled with oil?

As your car is a 1993 300D it's likely to be a 603 engine. Unless the Haynes manual specifies the 603 engine explicitly I would assume any instructions in it are incorrect

Cams are known to snap on Mercedes diesel engine when being removed & refitted so proceed with due caution

The tensioner has a stair case ratchet that you just return to the min position, that fully closed.

As Nick above do take care on re fitting making sure that the chain is not too tight.. when its all re fitted make sure that there is some slack in the left hand side and not overtight
