w124 300d injectors

working through the jobs on this old lady and have come to my last job which is to try and find the noisey bad injector, can i just crack the fuel union while she ticks over and would the noise quieten?, can these be rebuilt with new nozzles easily for diy.

Yes can be rebuilt quite easily but you will need to get them pop tested but that will not cost much.
Before you slacken the union just hold the injector line between two fingers and feel the pulse in the line , the one that pulses the hardest will be the one most likely that needs checking out.

well cracked each injector one by one and the car sounds the same, beginning to think this is how they sound after seeing some on youtube.

well my pop tester arrived yesterday and 1 by 1 i tested for chatter, release pressure, spray pattern and wiether they held pressure, they open at exactly 115bar which is whats stamped on the injector, i couldnt find faults with any, as i have now got rid of all the belt/pulley,and pump noise i can really hear the diesel engine and its sounds noisey to me, at tickover it sounds like a bag of marbles or ball bearing on the loose, take the revs to 1k and thr noise disapears?. any ideas, almost like pinking?

Vacuum pump springs to mind (early ones pre 87 I think could dump ball bearings out but later had a cage to stop them escaping ) , have a search on this forum in link for info

Could also be air being drawn in with fuel supply as this will cause a clatter at tick over that goes away as revs rise.

Injection pump timing , probably not but you could buy some 2ehn and put a dose in the tank and see if it changes the noise

hi mate, i did see tiny bubbles in the leak off pipes and i mean tiny, maybe thats it? but how and why are they there, i cleaned the tank out about a month back and checked all the lines while i was there .

just to ad shes starts instantly and idles very smooth and mpg is good for a big old girl but i,m sure it should be quieter.

went to ask advice from a diesel specialist today, part of the test i did not do was to hold the pressure just before they pop which i have done thhis evening and everyone of them squirts a stream, just before they open so looks like i need new nozzles,, best be nice to the wife and ask nicely.

well she just keeps on giving , there is a leak on top of the fuel pump, i believe its the delivery valves, looks like a night on youtube for me. tried to upload a vid and just kept saying error.

job for today, all pump seals were very flat and a few split, just been for a good run and she is bone dry, all went well until the last copper washer fell into the valve, i took a breather at this point as i thought i,m going to loose my s--t, 1 coffee later and the wifes crochet hook and i was back in buisness. to be honest no difference in running but atleast i know its good and no more diesel fumes. injector nozzles are next, but which are the best, been told bosch are made in india and are very poor quality.

well just an update to the clatter on tickover , so far changed 6 glow plugs 6 injector nozzles 6 delivery valve seals and crush washers, tank cleaned out and filters changed , diesel bug additive will be added at every fillup just to be sure, shes settled down and is as smooth and quiet as you can get, it has taken a few weeks for everything to settle down but what a lovley engine when all is well, and nearly everything is diy for most people, mercedes have definatly lost the plot with the modern benz .
