Having recently sold my e350 bluetec i have gone nuts and bought a 1993 300d , its in goodish condition for its 28 years but has a worn power steering pump which has play at the pulley and its noisey, i cannot get one anywere , does any body know a reliable reconditioner ?part number is 2104660201, i,m still in awe at the metal inlet manifold and no dpf and all the gubbins that go with a modern diesel.

a worn power steering pump which has play at the pulley
You seem to be confident in removing it from the car.
Try changing the bearing yourself, that must be what is causing the play and the noise.

mmm well i,m asuming its this, the belt squeaks almost like a slip but belt is tight, its like a chatter that rises with revs, on the surpentine belt there is crank at the bottom then alternator to the left and slightly higher, then in the middle its the automatic tensioner then at the top its the power steering pump, but if i spray wd40 on the belt it goes silent, any ideas ?.

Try changing the belt as a first go.

Does it do it worse when on a cold start ?, makes a lot of noise (belt squeal) which gets quieter as engine warms then it may be water pump.
I have had two water pumps go on two separate w124 om603’s, one was the wife's 89 model and it was the original pump and my 92 did the same a few years later.
As the engine coolant warms the bearings in the pump make less noise, loosen the belt when engine cold and you can feel the harshness.
Pumps partially seized so the belt squeals trying to drive it, same screeching noise as belt slipping on an alternator but the clue is the dash charging light has gone out.
Wd40 lets the belt slip over the offending hard to drive pulley which stops the noise.

Hi, thanks for that, if i get time tommorrow i will slip the belt off and check, the belt tensioner has a massive spring attached to it, is this the original tensioner and if so i may as well change it, can i fit the shock absorber type in its place. thanks

Tensioner springs seem to last years , never seen mention of them needing changing. If there was bad tension then power steering would be stiff and the alternator would probably not be charging .. the belt would also be polished smooth as well.
Its a tricky one finding out where the noise comes from, it took me around two months of fiddling about before I realised it was water pump on partners car because I blamed tensioner then alternator etc etc and these old Mercedes are well built because anything modern would make a noise one day and breakdown the next but these just go on and on.

well managed to take belt off today, power steering pump has a lot of play so ordered one from autodoc, everything else seems to spin smoothly, but the tensioner is shot , the amount of play around the bolt is horrendous and after removeing it completly looks like the whole thing is goosed, so ordered new shock, tensioner, and idler, also noticed a major oil leak coming from were the main tensioner bolt goes into the block, seems i,m going to be busy for a bit.

hi mate, yes will change everything that has any roughness or play, also the oil leak is oil leaking through the bolt for the tensioner so i think on reasembly will need threadlock or something simular, so far have been getting parts from autodoc.
