Anyone changed the differential mounting bushes?

If so, what were the symptoms that made you change them?  And did it help?

When jacking up the car using the diff as a jacking point (with a wooden block of course!), I noticed that the rearward facing bushes looked a litle 'torn' and generally worn out.

So, being picky about that sort of thing, I thought it might be a good idea to change them, or is it?

Part numbers to order from the dealership would be nice? Anyone?

Hi Richard

If the diff mountings have perished then usually you get a bang\knocking noise from the rear under acceleration.

Its not the sort of job you want to tackle if you have to do lying on your back. Minimum you have to drop the two bolts out of the diff casing. But you will have to disconnect the diff of the propshaft to gain enough access. I have in the past just dropped the diff out with the shafts to save time. Getting them out shouldn't be too much problems getting them back in again can be a little more difficult unless you have something to press them in again. We usually buget for 2-2.5hrs. 3 if you are struggling.

The mountings are only about £6 each plus vat from the dealers.

Good luck.

Regards

This might be too late for you, but I have just had the diff bushes replaced on my 1988 260E. Before it was done, I got a "clonk" going into D and R from standstill, and I also used to get occasional "clinks" and "clonks" when going over rough and rippled road surfaces. The bushes also looked torn as well.

It took the local independent 2 hours to do, and the result is excellent. The car is silent into gear now and the clinking has gone over ripples. It is so much quieter to drive and feels smoother as well. I would NOT fancy doing the job myself though!
