Hi, have just found your forum after eight years of MB ownership - doh! Wish I'd found you before. Anyway, apologies but my first post is a cry for help. I have just retired my old 300TE & replaced it with a newer (for me) version. (1989 with 194K miles). The problem is that the idle is erratic, sometimes running up to 1500 and dropping back to 500 intermittantly. When driving it will sometimes die out when stopping at junctions etc until fully warm, when it may just drop to 500 or so. At other times it idles fine at about 700-750. If left idling it will sometimes vary intermittantly, other times be stable. Having owned the car for just over a week I plan to go through the obvious this weekend (if the weather improves!) checking for loose/damaged wiring, loose/damaged vacuum pipes & check the airfilter, plugs etc. I guess this may be a familiar problem but have not found anything identical in any posts yet. Are there any known problems or common failures that give these symptoms? Many thanks for any advice

Your Mercedes
BMW 525 Diesel Touring
AFAIK this model has an idle control valve and this would be the first place I'd look

From there the list includes OVP relay, crankshaft sensor and temp sensor

Many thanks, hopefully I'll be able to make some progress with it this weekend if the weather improves. I'll post up the results
