Yes, another one trying to save having to mortgage my future! The auto box on my 320CE, the 5 speed one, increasingly fails to change into 5th. Yesterday, for 75 miles! The box has been looked at by a respected repairer, but nothing found. Still, I had it serviced, so not too bad. Is this a recognisable thing to anyone out there? It would be good to be able to point the lucky repairer in a possible direction as to the cause of the problem. Otherwise, the W124 is still a very good car. All insight gratefully received.

Go for a long drive & see if it is 5th gear it is missing. There is a problem with these, in which they are actually missing 4th gear. The box operates perfectly apart from going from 3rd, straight into 5th. See how much the revs drop during this gearchange or is it revving higher than normal on the motorway. This will give you an indication as to wether it is 4th or 5th gear that's the problem. If, as I suspect, it's a 4th gear problem, don't worry, it's a switch in the selector, not the gearbox. Let me know, good luck.

Thanks for your post, I do have a chart somewhere that gives the RPM for all the gears and the change points if this would help

Hi. The highest gear, when the box is not working properly, gives about 500 revs to 10 mph, ie 50mph=2500revs. 5th gear is longer, so it is 5th that is missing, I believe, and then only sometimes. Thanks, getting warmer...........Andrew.

Solenoid? OK I'll mention that when the repairer finally gets the car. Thank you....Andrew.

Thanks Malcolm, I'm slowly getting used to this new-fangled blogging. As I say above, it is 5th that is missing sometimes. regards, Andrew.
