i have a 1994 e220 with 110,000 miles on it.the abs light goes off when the engine is started and stays off around town however after about forty or fifty miles on the motorway the warning light comes on and stays on until the ignition is turned off, when the car is restarted the light goes out as normal and stays out for about fifty miles.any ideas or advice would be appreciated.

The sensor has/is about to fail. The sensor is about a tenner and it can be as much as £100 to have fitted  . Next time you have the car serviced ask them to change the sensor, depending on the service they may already have that area exposed (brakes) so the labour will be a lot less (that's what I did). The sensor failed at about 120,000 miles on my 1998 c230k. I only got it fixed because ASR and BAS use that sensor and with the coming winter I thought traction would be useful, plus the stupid warning light lit the whole interior up at night and cruise control is disabled while that sensor is dead! :(

Hi Stephen,

I would suggest you get the vehicle into your local dealer or specialist. Off the top of my head I would think there is a faulty wheel sensor. The co-axial cable maybe split, as the wheel turns then the cable puts a fault in the system putting the light on. Sensors are about £70+ each so I would get it checked first.

Of course it may be another problem in the system. So get it checked proffesionaly. The only thing you may be able to do your self. Is remove the sensor on the front wheels held on with two 6mm allen key bolts and give them a clean. You never know that may cure it. But don't hold your breath.

HI
andy has good advice the only other thing that comes to mind is check all your tyre sizes 60 mph is common threshhold for tyre sizes to put lights on. wheel hubs can corrode and give dodgy speed signal but cruise control would pick this up long before ABS does cruise behave OK when working.

Hello,

I have an E220 '94 with 126K. My ABS light came on about 600 miles ago during a short journey, it went out when I got home. I have been on the M'way since without further problems. However, at my next service I will mention it due to the advice from others on this post.

Hi Jim,

Its doubtfull that they will find a lot. Your vehicle is earlier in reletive terms with regards to technology. There could be a number of reasons why the ABS light came on. Out of which if the voltage drops to below 9v. If the light is now of and is staying of. Don't worry. The ABS is working fine. As the vehicle will do a self test every time is starts.

PS. I don't suppose it will hurt to mention it. Then they can make sure all sensors etc are as they should.

ABS Problems

I had similar problems with the ABS on my '88 260E (W124), turned out to be a dodgy alternator which was causing the problems...

Mine started like you describe, then ended up being permamently on...

Rob.
