As above but you need to kick down to engage first

Ah that would explain it! Did they ever do a 5 speed box? Would that help the economy?

Yes yours is the 722.4 and the 24 valve version had the 722.5 offered as an option,, it was a solinoid operated 5th

5 speeders are quite rare and seemingly desirable, but can be troublesome. 3k rpm on a motorway cruise doesn't do your mpg many favours, and is the only time I'd like an extra gear.

To be truthful Stumpy the main faults are vacuum pipes and not the 5 speed box its self

Actually I should have said "Probably four". The 5-speed was an option from 1991/1992 but I've never seen it on a 300. I've seen it on 300-24 valves, though

Thats correct and was first offered on the 24 valve engine, it stayed an option. I dont think that many other cars used it

The thing to do is to buy a box from a breaker with the ECU and loom

Price wise I have no idea

I have a 5 speed on mine which is a 00 car on a 91 plate.

From memory it cruises at an indicated (ahem) 90 - about 80ish at 3500 rpm

It's a "non-trivial" task (as the Americans say) to install a 5-speed. It needs the box, speedo, ECU, wiring, lever/housing and probably a few things I know nothing about
