I've just check the oil level the autobox of my 300CE-24. Difficult to tell because the oil is so clean, but it looks like its some distance over the max mark. Manual says I should drain some off, but I think its been like that for a long time - will it cause a problem? (engine was at running temp when I measured it). I'm new to Mercedes and auto boxes! Any advice?

Thanks

doesn't the engine have to be running as well

it does on my sl. When I check the oil cold and motor off it seems way over the top, but it settles down when the engine is at temp and running. Check your handbook for the procedure.

Thanks,

Yes, I had the engine running and in park. Still way over the top.

in which case

yes, drain or syphon some off. I'd suggest doing it in half-litre lumps. Mind you don't poke any dirt down into the neck of the filler, that would be a bad thing.

Thanks,

Made up a tube with an old soap dispenser pump on one end and took out half a litre. Level on max now.

How are you measuring the level?

Are you warming up the box and then running through all the gears?

Yes, I drove the car for over 10 miles, stopped (in a flat place), put it into park and with the engine still running I checked the oil level. Seems about right now. Colour was good too. I was checking the oil level because sometimes its slow to select reverse gear when cold (see my other enquiry). Its going to a speciallist on Friday - hope it won't be too serious! Changes perfectly otherwise, and reverse is also ok 99% of the time.

Thanks for your help.
