Hi
my blown lamp warning light on my dash wont go off even though I have checked every bulb and they are all ok. It only comes on if I put the lights on and it comes on a couple of seconds after I turn the switch. I have recently replaced both tail lamps the last two times it came on but now it wont go off.

small problem I know but does anyone have any bright (scuse the pun) Ideas?

the old one is the number plate light(s)..

also check / wiggle all the connections - gently sand the bottom of the bulbs (the lead bit) to ensure a good contact?

Check and make sure its the correct bulbs and they are fitted the correct way round

I had this same problem on W124 estate a couple of days ago. I thought I had checked all bulbs, and was beginning to think that the warning unit might be faulty. However, a recheck revealed that one of the front parking light bulbs was at fault. These are easily missed. Ignition must be off to test these!
Good luck.

John

faulty light warning

If you change the rear sidelight bulbs to 10W instead of the 5W that the MB handbook says you should find that the warning light goes out.

Had the same problem with my W124 300D. Front sidelight had gone so I replaced it but the light was still on. Then checked the rear and a tail light had gone replaced this and the light was still on. Then asked someone to look at the brake lights when I pressed the pedal. One of the stop lamps had failed as well replaced that and the light went out and has stayed out. So suggest you check the brake lights if you haven't already :) .

everything that's been said so far but if you are sure all your bulbs are working you may try cleaning the contacts in the rear bulb holders.

Thr brake lights should make the warning light behave differently with it only lighting after you press the brake pedal and not going out until you switch the ignition off - presumably to help us differentiate which bulb has failed.

I've had this same lamp staying on intermittently now for the last 18 months and have long since given up trying to fix it :)

Good Luck

Thanks for your help

Thanks everyone,

In the end it turned out to be sandpaper on the bulb contacts in the tail lights that cured it. I had gone through most of the suggestions but the parking lights is one I hadnt thought of so thanks for that.

As this is my only problem this year I still reckon the W124 takes some beating . Actually that s not true the aircon wasnt cool enough so that was two problems still not bad for 160kmiles.

cheers
Keith

w124-blown lamp warning lamp permanently on

Hi
I had the same problem on my 1986 w124 estate from 1991 to October this year! I never found the cause and gave up trying. I have changed to a 1997 E300td estate and I now have much more to worry about. The 124 model was easy to maintain and served me well but I am afraid that I may find more than a warning light that I am unable to fix myself.
Good luck trying.

Hi

A check of correct rating of the bulbs is a good idea. The system actually checks for specific resistance at each bulb position (= terribly over complicated)
