Noticed a low grinding noise on heavy braking in our 1994 E220 this weekend. Sounds like time for pad replacement.

Someone on the forum has recommended this company - http://www.speedways.co.uk/index.html?target=index.html

They have a set of 4 pads for an E220 at £29 including VAT, but don't specify what make they are. Anyone have any experience with this company ?

If I go to the dealer for pads, what brand are they going to supply, and anyone know what they're currently charging.

Thanks,

Larry

Larry,

The grinding noises were probably the metal plate of the pad grinding on the disc.:( This will have knackered the disc. If this is the case then you will need discs, pads and wear indicators as they are obviously not working and need checking, at least one will have gone.

You may be very lucky and have caught a stone between the pad and disc, in which case you might not need anything. Check it first.

depends how quickly you catch the grinding, you may be OK you need to very carefully check the discs for damage, marking etc.
If there is only light marking to the discs and there is plenty of life left in them, it may be possible to get them "refaced". I dont think its as common practice as it used to be

As for the pads Id personally go for either (depending on pocket depth) Dealer supplied pads, or the pads supplied by german and swedish carparts (come hightly recommended)

It may sound like an old wife's tale, but it's possible to tell the difference between Mercedes pads and cheap aftermarket pads. The cheap pads are rather all-or-nothing whereas with the Mercedes pads the braking force is more easily modulated and stopping becomes a bit less frantic

Of course this just a softening-up exercise before suggesting you use proper pads. But it's true - the aftermarket pads I've driven on are demonstrably poorer. And they're hardly expensive

Mercmonkey,

I've found that refacing a disc is as or occasionally more expensive than buying a new one. Also, the quality of refacing is a bit variable and its a pain in the rump to keep taking the disc off to correct the run out.

On the subject of pads I always buy pads from reputable manufacturers ie ATE, AP/Lockheed, Brembo, Pagid, Mintex, etc. With those pads you can guaranttee quality and tune in your preferences.
