What is the car, how old, mileage, when does it whine , speed ,idle, engine on/off .....
whining noise when the car is started .. don't know where it is coming from.???E220 CABRIOLET W124 1995
78,000 Miles
it whines all the time once it is started and running.
cars is still performing okay. but noisey.
Something engine related then. fan belt, alternator bearing, water pump, fuel pump - they can all whine - could even be the stereo suppression ... Without hearing it, this is going to be guesswork from anyone. I'd have a mechanic take a look.
I took it to the MB MAIN DEALER and they said its okay.... but it wasn't there originally..but someone mentioned fan... but don't know what fan they were talking about???
Try turning off the heater fan - does that make a difference ?
Turn on the ignition without the engine - can you hear it.
I have a whine from the heater fan regulator on my W210 but it goes away after a while and it's not £140 annoying as yet. I had a wirr from the ambient temp fan on a C a while ago (in the interior light cluster) but I don't know where yours would be.
Is the noise coming from inside the car or under the bonnet ? Try parking it in a garage and having a listen when there is less noise about to mask it.
its not from the heater fan.. its coming from under the bonnet.. but don't know where.thers no noise when i switch off car (ignition on)
i have sprayed wd40 on pullys belts to see if it reduces the whining but no luck!!! any other ideas
If it doesn't happen when the ignition is on but the engine is off, it points to, though given the electronics on these things doesn't prove, a moving part. Does it sound like a bearing noise. Perhaps try WD40 on the alternator shaft ? (used to work on my 1981 Student issue Ford escort! - )
I think it's going to be a case of moving your head around trying to identifiy where the noise is coming from. An old mechanicing trick is to get a long handled screw driver and put one end on a suspect part and the other to your ear. (don't get anything caught in the pulleys though!)
Perhaps you could remove the drive belt and start it up (not for long though 1-2 mins tops as there will be no cooling so do it from cold). This would isolate the block from the ancilliaries.
As an aside, a my Merc dealer told me that my misfire was normal "they all do it" - He didn't seem amused when I suggested that it only proved that they all have the same fault! May be worth trying another mechanic / dealer. 3rd opinion worked in my case.
