W124 control arms

I have a 2 ton jack, axle stands and sockets and wrenches. How are the chances of me changing the rear control/trailing arms?

very good, easy job, if merc arms get the bolt kit and spacers as well.

Make sure you tighten the bolts ONLY after the car is resting on the wheels or the suspension is at the correct position.

This will ensure the rubbers are in the correct position. IF not in the correct position, the rubbers will twist too much tear prematurely, and all your hard work will be wasted.

Here are the part numbers I have been recommended

2 x 210 350 33 06 - Upper Front Control Arms w/ 12mm Diameter mounting bolt hole


2 x 210 350 34 06 - Upper Rear Camber Struts w/ 12mm Diameter mounting hole


2 x 210 350 38 06 - Lower Front Thrust Arms w/ 12mm Diameter mounting bolt hole


2 x 210 350 21 53 – Center One End Control Arms w/ Ball Joint

There are always torque values, but refer to the Haynes manual.

I would do one arm at a time verses unbolting several arms in one go, as your suspension will fall apart that if you unbolt several arms at same time.

Haynes manual is good for identifying name of each arm, and this is important with the toe arm as it affects the rear tracking criteria. So, you need to circle the joint position with white paint to keep the same toe position on that arm.

if these were faulty would they cause a knocking in the suspension at the rear of the car , mine still suffers a knocking noise when hitting hard bumps , doesnt happen when gradual movement only if the bump is abrupt.

That's normally the rear subframe leading bushes. They're available in a kit of two for about £70

or the diff could be bumping the floor.

As all diffs tend to leak some oil, the two rear rubber diff mounts can perish and then the diff is wobbly on it's mounts.

Mounts can be a bit of a pig to change without special tool and/or improvised tool which can be made up from tube and washers according to some USA posts on their forums.

Consider the exhaust banging as well as the suspension rings and mounts can and do fail.
