Anybody had a problem with their w124 COUPE drivers door catch. Symptom is that sometimes it just doesn't shut but "bounces" off the stop as its refusing to latch. I,ve noticed the chrome door lever is not returning to its flush position in the door recess also. Its nothing to do with the remote locking because when it does larch with some fiddling it locks and unlocks fine. I have lubricated the lock externally and this help for a while.I am thinking 2 possibilities.
1. weak return spring on operating handle or door.
2.operating cable is slack/kinked/neads greasing-replaced.
Anyone experienced a similar problem and how did you cure it???

2 is most likley.

You could remove the bit of plastic round the interior handle for a quick look. You should be ale to see if that end is working correctly.

It was the cable on mine - takes 5 mins to get the door card off and lube it up.

Opportunity to properly grease the check strap at the same time before it self-destructs and creaks!

How do you do that please? The wood trim is coming away from the door card, I think that there is a nut missing.

Take the trim off at the wing mirror, it pulls out at the top first them up.

Take the screw out that holds the plastic bit near the door catch and then take off the plastic bit.

Pull off the plastic bit at the door handle and then remove the 10mm bolt.

Remove the door handle by moving it forward then pulling it out at the top. Disconnect the cable (there is a spring clip there somewhere)

The whole door panel should now be free to move upwards. There is a metal part next to the glass that will need a bit of help.

You may want to remove the puddle light or you can just be careful once the panel is off.

Door card removal:

unscrew window winder if you have "analogue" windows!

unscrew & remove plastic lock trim

unscrew and remove chrome top trim on rear door edge (coupe only)

pull away mirror trim triangular piece top front of door (unclip top and pull upwards carefully!) - if you have manual mirrors, remove lever first

unclip and remove door lock inner handle trim and then remove screw.

slide lock pull forwards and then unhook lock cable as it becomes visible; remove pull

pull door card upwards to unhook from door

when you replace it make sure ALL clips slide in or it will squeek/creak and drive you mad...and put the plastic shield back or moisture will warp the card.

while its off:

tighten the wood trim bolts
check the windor winder
check for rust
grease the check strap (NOT WD40/superlube or it will start to creak)
check the vac pipes to the lock (assuming central locking)
pull off & replace wiring connectors (they tend to have a film of corrosion)

I'm away for the car so can't do a pic.

Chrome plate, lock cover are straightforward without risk and just fall off when screws removed (although the chrome plate has screws which are very easy to strip when re-tightening at the end.

The triangle inside the mirror should be eased away at the top and then removed upwards.

The cover over the inside lock lever needs easing away - it then "pops" off. The clip points on it are quite robust.

After unscrewing the bolt that gets exposed, the lock lever and remaining surround then slides forwards to disengage a plastic leg from the door and then pulls outwards (after releasing the cable hook).

The only risky part is the mirror triangle but as long as you pull the top away and then the whole thing upwards you should be fine.

The card itself can be helped out by easing the top where it sits on the door edge. Then care as you set it down not to damage the cable to the under-door lamp.

Not really much risk of damage to clips.

Windows down means no pressure on the top sealing rubbers so the door just shuts.

Windows up, the lack of a pillar mean that Merc made the top rubbers press hard against the glass to brace it on purpose to keep the wind noise down!

Totally normal for the coupe. If you make it just clunk shut then wind roar will result.
