Hi all, I think I remember somebody answering a similar prob to this a while ago but cant seem to find it. mt w124 coupe dash lights have gone out when I changed the bulb for the auto illumination, not all of them but the heater control, window switches, center consol switches. I think i recall someone saying there is a seperate fuse for these somewhere as i checked the ones in the fuse box and these are fine. If so where is it and how difficult is it to get to? any special tools reqd etc? thanks for any help, wiggy.

There is a small red fuse on the rear of the instrument cluster.

You can purchase the instrument cluster removal tools from MB Parts dept.

Just slot those tools in the 10 and 2 o'clock position and pull simultaneously.

The tools are only about £7. Very cheap and very useful.

Yes, that red fuse is the one that control the illumination of the centre console switches, upper and lower.

The only lighting not controlled by that fuse is that of the instrument cluster itself.

So it makes perfect sense to put the fuse on the back of the only thing it has nothing to do with !!!!!!!!

Thanks for the comments on the toys - currently looking for an SL60 AMG though and not having much joy. Not too many out there....

The advice you have received is sound.

I just wanted to add a few things:

1. The MB tool is best - but you could knock a couple up yourself.
2. Be sure you insert and engage the tools in the right place .
3. This http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopfor...;threadid=71691&highlight=cluster+removal may help.

PS: You do not need to pull your cluster all the way out disconnecting all as they do in this link - just far enough to identify the 'red top hat' remove and replace. However when reading the link look at the picture posted by Chris W at 08-03-2003 03:22 AM - and that will help you identify the 'red top hat' - ie the fuse you are interested in.

what a result, went to the merc dealer in swindon for a fuse and the dash removal tools, the parts chap asked if I only wanted to buy the tools to change the fuse. When I told him yes he said you dont have to do that sir, if you let me have your keys I will get one the technicians to do it now for you. When he brought the car back he said that one of the reversing light bulbs had gone so they changed it for me foc! charged me £1.61 for the fuse and that was it. Very impressed, good service and all the staff were polite although i was in my work gear in a 10 year old car. customer care returns.

That is a result!!

Many dealers do get a bad name, but that is an example of how to win and retain a customer and to generate potential future ones.

You should of course have refused his kind offer and gone ahead and done it yourself, just think of the feel good factor - mebbes not!

PS: For accuracy please post the specific dealer name and addy.
