this is my posting.can any one help me.driving along this morning.hit the brakes and nothing happened.(sharp intake of breath) the pedal did not move.it felt solid.so pulled over to the side of the road removed my keys but the engine did not stop.had to use the fuel cut off in the engine to stop it.any ideas any one .thanks

There's a vacuum-driven system to shut off the fuel feed. There's no inlet manifold vacuum in a diesel so the cars use a vacuum pump to provide a vacuum for the pneumatic systems like engine shutoff & brake servo. Sounds like you have bad pump or vacuum leak. The brakes will work - they'll just be incredibly heavy if unservoed

Find your local W124 expert!

thanks for the tip mate.had a quick look in my HAYNES book but nothing jumps out at me .do you know what it is call it the book.sorry to be a pest.regards

Forget the Haynes book - it's useless. I think the vacuum pump is in one unit with the power steering pump on most cars

spot on nick.took the pump off and it's in bits looking for a new one now .thanks mate.
