I've noticed a few times now that going over harsh bumps a clonk comes from the rear suspension of my 124 e220. Over light bumps the suspension is silent but ever since I've owned this car I feel all bumps through the rear suspension much harsher than through the front suspension. Don't know if the car is just set up this way or if this indicates wear of the rear suspension?

The car just passed the MOT with no advisories so I'm guessing theres no pressing need to change anything but just would be interested to know what causes this and if a fix is cheap and necessary and will improve the way it drives.

Cheers and happy new year to all!

If it's a deep clonk noise, particularly evident when going over drain covers, it'll be the rear subframe leading bushes

Mercedes make a repair kit with a pair of bushes & mounting hardware for about £70

Cheers Guys,

I've looked at the history and notice that the previous owner had the rear subframe bushes and new antiroll bar bushes done at 115k 3 years ago. The mileage now is 135k. Does this mean its probably something else as I presume they should last longer than that?

Havent noticed any deteriation of the ride since i bought it with 120k but I don't know how it drove originally. Does the clonking mean it wont be riding as intended or is it unlikely to make much difference? I only ask as having just passed the MOT, with the tyres wearing evenly, and the parts replaced recently im tempted to do nothing certainly until the weather gets warmer or the problem gets worse

Have you checked your exhaust is not hitting the body? Or that your spare wheel and jack are secure?
