Hi everyone - 1995 E280 estate (one of the last ones).

The car was parked up for quite a while and when I started it (thankfully with the bonnet open) there was a loud bang and the top of the air filter box was blown off, breaking the clip retainers. I replaced the top of the filter box and the car started and ran OK.

Subsequently over the next day or two, although it ran ok when driving, the revs rhythmically surged from about 500 to 1200 up...down...up...down..etc on tickover. This has gradually got worse until this morning it stalled every time I put it in reverse and tried to back it off the drive and now although it starts and fires up, it immediately cuts out. It starts again and cuts out. Occasionally I can get it to rev at about 2000+rpm if I keep my foot on the gas, but as soon as I let it tick over it cuts out.

I have replaced the OVP relay and MAF sensor. It's got fresh petrol in it.

Any ideas?

Thanks! Dave

You have a vac leak somewhere. I had similar on my w124 years ago.

Hell of alot is controlled by vac on those cars. Ingenious.
