Hi Folk's,

I have an E280 (w124) Estate (1994 facelift model) that has a permanent whine from the engine bay that changes level when you accelerate and is always there when idling.

It's not drive chain as it does it even when stationary and in park/neutral.

Ive read numerous "American" versions that have a smog/air pump problem ?
Does any one know if the Uk version has one ?
Otherwise the car runs and drives 100%
The noise sounds like a bearing whine, but cant track it down. Please help !

Also does any one know how to remove the centre heater console to change the bulb and the electric mirror switch ?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Neil, I am responding concerning the bulb replacement. You will need a short length cross head screw driver firstly!

(From memory) you will need to remove the heater control dials by pulling them off, then undo the retaining nuts behind.
Then if you look above the radio there are two screws that hold the wood trim in place, undo and the wood trim should lift upwards. If you have a modern radio with removable facia, it be easier to remove the facia to do this.

I think there are four bulbs, two for the heater control dials and the other two provide illumination for the control detailing.

I am a novice and found it easy!

Good luck and hope this helps, Simon

If the whine is at engine speed then you have a long list of possible culprits. I'd start by removing the serpentine belt - then you can try and track down where the noise is coming from by running the engine or spinning the various pulleys on the belt

Belt routing is in the car's handbook. Your local garage or parts factor will also have a belt diagram book
