Hello People

I have recently developed a knocking noise on my rear left shocky. I had a look under the wheel arch and it would appear that the silver section at the top of the shock which i assume is the bit used to bolt onto the top mount is showing, where as on the right hand side rear shocky is not (the black outer upper section of the shock is butted against the top mount) When i turn to the right at slow speed i get what also feels like a bit of a judder coming from the left rear etc.... Anybody any ideas or is it just time to bite the bullet and replace my rear shockys. Please help.:)

It's not a shock absorber, it's a suspension leg

Sounds like the top mount has perished. Check the microfiche with a dealer parts man and see how it all goes together. There will be some kind of mount

It is a shock absorber, or if you want, a damper.

I think perhaps Bolide was thinking of the front strut.

I guess you can see that the plastic outer cover that normally hides the piston rod has slid down to the bottom of the shock absorber.

This happens sometimes.

Is the shock leaking any fluid ???????

There are suspension links in the rear configeration which do wear.

They are the Torque link and the Thrust link in particular.

The bushes wear on them. Easy to replace as the links come complete with bushes installed. Also quite cheap.

But you need to study the manuals to understand it all, otherwise go to a Merc specialist.

No, I thought it was an estate. Sorry, doesn't matter what the car is - I always think it's an estate!

The car is indeed not an estate lol, but however the rear shock was leaking quite badly when i took the car in recently for an oil service. The handling has changed very slightly recently as well. With regards to the front end i had bought the car of a good friend and he had spent nearly £2000 getting all the front end done about a year or so ago so hopefully that should be cool. While i'm here i may as well ask if anybody knows where would be the best place to get some genuine replacement plug leads as the ones i have are arcing badly?

Hi!

I have the same problem - knocking sounds from the rear left. Except on my car, closer inspection revealed that the damper is leaking fluid.

So I guess I have to replace it.

However, I have the Sportline version so I am not sure which dampers to buy. The problem is that I am a student so money is very tight now :| and according to my local garage the Sportline dampers cost 3x the standard ones.

So my question is - do you know if it is possible (that is: does it affect the driving in a significant way) to install a non-sport damper in the rear left ?

Don't ask a local garage, ask Mercedes. Call your local parts department, give them your VIN number and which side the shocker is on and they'll give you a price

They should be replaced in pairs, I think

If purchasing from MB is too expensive then look at Bilstein. I have heard good reports regarding their B12 Kit, but that is for the whole car and includes springs.

Replace both rear shocks otherwise you'll find that the older one will effect the handling and will die soon anyway.

Quite agree

The Bilstein B12 kit is great but costs more than replacing just the dampers.

Sachs or Bilstein B6 dampers for replacing the rears should do the trick.

I have this feeling of déja vu!!
